ABOUT DARE
150 years ago in 1870, the North Carolina General Assembly voted to form a new county. They named it Dare County in memory of Virginia Dare, the first child born of English parents in America. Dare County includes six incorporated towns: Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, and Manteo. The County also encompasses Roanoke Island, Colington Island, Hatteras Island, and the Dare mainland.
Dare County stretches along nearly 110 miles of the North Carolina coastline and contains much of what is known as the "Outer Banks" resort and vacation areas. The coastal community has a rich and diverse history thanks in part to its unique geography and desirable way of life. Dare is home to many historic firsts, national parks, and other sites. Discover what has made Dare an excellent place to live, work, and play, and celebrate 150 years in the land of beginnings throughout 2020.
